What is Grunge Music?

Grunge music is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged in the mid-1980s. It was originally associated with the punk rock scene in Seattle, Washington, and gained mainstream popularity in the early 1990s. Grunge music is characterized by its distorted guitars, angst-ridden lyrics, and dark, gloomy atmosphere.

Grunge music became popular in the early 1990s due to the success of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains. These bands brought grunge music to the mainstream and helped to make it one of the most popular genres of the 1990s. Grunge music was also influenced by other genres such as punk rock, heavy metal, and classic rock.

The popularity of grunge music began to decline in the late 1990s due to the death of Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana. However, grunge music has continued to influence other genres of music such as indie rock and metalcore.
