What is Grunge?

Grunge is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Grunge music is typically characterized by distorted guitars, feedback, and heavy drums. Seattle is considered the birthplace of grunge music, and some of the most famous grunge bands include Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden.

The History of Grunge

Grunge is a subgenre of alternative rock and a subculture that emerged during the mid-1980s in the Pacific Northwest U.S. state of Washington, particularly in Seattle and nearby towns. The early grunge movement revolved around Seattle’s independent record label Sub Pop and the region’s underground music scene. By the early 1990s its popularity had spread, with grunge bands appearing in California, then emerging in other parts of the United States and Europe.

Grunge music is characterized by its dirty, stripped-down sound and its focus on personal, often angst-ridden lyrics. Grunge fashion is characterized by its unkempt (“slacker”) look, including ripped jeans, flannel shirts, and doc martens.

The term “grunge” was first used to describe the Seattle music scene by music critic Mark Arm in the May 1981 issue of Seattle fanzine “Desperate Times”. Arm used the term to describe bands such as Green River—whose EP Dry as a Bone was released that month—and Blood Circus. Official recognition of the genre came when “Gimme Indie Rock” compiler Sean Murphy used “grunge” to describe Green River’s Dry as a Bone EP in his column in June 1986 issue of British magazine Melody Maker. In late 1986Seattle musician Steve Turner of Mudhoney popularized Arm’s use of the word “grunge” when he used it to describe Mudhoney’s recently released EP Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early Singles. Turner said he adopted the term because it had been used by rock historian George Gimarc (author of Punk Diary) to describe earlier Seattle bands such as Green River and Blood Circus; Gimarc had coined it as an ironic reference to the clean-cut image cultivated by some college rock bands at the time (such as R.E.M.) who adopted an appearance similar to that of 1950s greasers or 1960s surfers; unlike these bands, grunge artists cultivated a scruffy, slacker look and embraced an abrasive musical aesthetic that defied existing pop music conventions.

The Sound of Grunge

Grunge is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged during the mid-1980s in the American state of Washington, particularly in Seattle. It became incredibly popular in the early 1990s and was associated with a DIY ethic, as well as with grungy fashion and a variety of other subculture trends. Musically, grunge is characterized by heavy guitar riffs, often playing power chords with distortion and feedback. Lyrically, grunge songs often deal with topics such as social alienation, apathy, and disaffection; they are also often angst-filled and angsty.

The term “grunge” was first used in print in the Seattle weekly newspaper The Rocket in July 1991, to describe Green River’s Dry as a Bone EP. Sub Pop recording artist Mudhoney is considered to be the first grunge band. With their first album,1989’s Superfuzz Bigmuff, Mudhoney established themselves as one of the pioneers of the Seattle sound.
