Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit

Nirvana’s classic 1991 track “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is probably one of the most iconic grunge songs of all time. And what could be more iconic than the accompanying music video, with its now-famous neon sign? The sign reads “Nirvana” in a jagged, industrial font, and it pulses and flickers like a beacon in the dark. It’s the perfect representation of Nirvana’s raw, primal energy, and it’s just as catchy today as it was when it was first released.

Pearl Jam – Jeremy

Pearl Jam’s Neon Sign from their album, Jeremy, is one of the most iconic Grunge Neon Signs in music. The sign features a young boy with his arms crossed, with the words “Jeremy” written in a grunge-style font. The sign is said to represent the alienation and hostility that many teenagers feel.

Alice in Chains – Would?

Alice in Chains – Would?

This song is off of Alice in Chains’ second studio album, Dirt (1992). The music video was the band’s first to receive heavy rotation on MTV. It features the band performing in front of a giant neon sign that reads “Would?”. The sign is an homage to the one that hung outside of the now-defunct Seattle music venue, The Vogue, which was a popular hangout for the city’s grunge scene in the early 1990s.

The Vogue was located on Seattle’s Capitol Hill and was known for its dive-bar vibe and cheap drinks. It closed its doors in 1993, but its neon sign still hangs outside of the building. The Alice in Chains sign is a replica of the Vogue sign, and it now hangs in the rock band’s museum in Seattle.

Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun

Grunge neon signs were all the rage in the ’90s, and Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” was one of the most iconic. The eerie green glow of the sun against a black background was both captivating and foreboding, perfectly capturing the dark tone of the song.
