DJ Kool Herc

Hip hop music originated in the 1970s when block parties became popular in New York City, particularly in the Bronx. DJ Kool Herc is credited as being the father of hip hop for his use of innovative DJing techniques, including extended breaks and playing two copies of the same record at the same time. Herc’s style was later picked up by other DJs, who began to experiment with their own techniques.

Joseph Saddler, better known as Grandmaster Flash, is a hip hop pioneer who was born in Barbados and raised in the Bronx. He is considered one of the first DJs to create and perfect the quick mix technique, which allows a DJ to play multiple records in quick succession without losing the beat. This technique would go on to be an integral part of the hip hop style of music. In addition to his contributions to the music itself, Grandmaster Flash is also credited with helping to spread hip hop culture throughout New York City and beyond.

The Rise of Gangsta Rap

In the late eighties and early nineties, a new type of music called gangsta rap emerged from the streets of Compton and South Central Los Angeles. This type of music was characterized by its violent and explicit lyrics, which often glorified gang life and drug use.

N.W.A. was an American hip hop group from Compton, California, who were active from 1986 to 1991. The group was made up of rappers Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, MC Ren, and DJ Yella, and their controversial music spoke directly to the experiences of young Black men living in inner-city Los Angeles.

N.W.A.’s debut album Straight Outta Compton was released in 1988 to critical acclaim and commercial success, and is widely considered to be one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. The album’s success helped to mainstream gangsta rap and brought it into the mainstream consciousness, sparking a wave of West Coast hip hop artists who would become some of the biggest names in the genre.
