The Story

The Sound of Music is a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical originally made famous by the film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. It is based on the true story of the Von Trapp family who escaped Nazi Germany during World War II. The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria, a young nun who leaves her convent in Austria to become a governess for the seven children of Captain Georg von Trapp. She eventually falls in love with the Captain and they marry, but when Austria is annexed by Nazi Germany, they are forced to flee their home. With the help of Maria’s friend, Max, they escape over the Alps to Switzerland. The Sound of Music is a beloved musical with iconic songs such as “Edelweiss”, “My Favorite Things”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, and of course, “The Sound of Music”.

The Characters

The Sound of Music is a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical inspired by the real-life von Trapp family. The story follows Maria, a young nun who is sent to live with the von Trapps. She quickly falls in love with the family and starts to teach the children how to sing. But when Austria is invaded by Nazi Germany, the von Trapps must flee their home to escape the Nazis.

The Sound of Music features some of the most memorable characters in musical theater history. Maria von Trapp is the central character of the story. She is a kind and caring woman who comes into the von Trapp family’s life and changes it forever. The von Trapps are a large family with seven children: Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta, and Gretl. They are all kindhearted kids who love to sing and have a lot of fun together. Captain Georg von Trapp is the father of the von Trapp children. He is a kind man who loves his children very much, but he can be strict at times. Elsa Schraeder is Captain von Trapp’s fiancée. She is an elegant woman who does not approve of Maria or the way she is raising the children. Max Detweiler is Captain von Trapp’s friend and business partner. He helps arrange for the von Trapps to sing at the Salzburg Festival and later helps them escape from Austria.
