Born Wasalu Muhammad Jaco in 1982 in Chicago, Illinois, Lupe Fiasco was raised by his mother, Shirley Jaco. His father, Gregory Jaco, was a member of the Black Panthers and an associate of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan; he was killed when Lupe was just three years old. Raised as a Muslim, Lupe attended Catholic school as a child before eventually being homeschooled by his mother. As a teenager, he began rhyming under the name “Lupless” and started working with local hip hop group Da Pak. He later dropped out of high school but continued to pursue a career in music, eventually changing his stage name to “Lupe Fiasco.”

In 2004, Lupe signed to Atlantic Records and released his first single,” Kick Push.” His debut album, Food & Liquor , was released two years later to critical acclaim; it went on to earn him three Grammy Award nominations. His follow-up album, The Cool , was equally successful and cemented his reputation as one of the most promising young rappers in the industry. Common, born as Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr., is a hip hop recording artist, actor, film producer and poet from Chicago, Illinois.
