Introduction

Heart and Soul is a 1941 popular song with music by Hoagy Carmichael and lyrics by Frank Loesser. The song first appeared in the 1938 film Orchestra Wives as an instrumental piece performed by Georgie Stoll and his orchestra. Carmichael recorded the song with The Pied Pipers vocal quartet and Johnny Mercer in 1945, and the instrumental version by The Glenn Miller Orchestra was a number-one hit in 1941. English DJ Neil Fox had a UK number one hit with his 1994 cover version.

The sheet music for “Heart and Soul” was published in 1938 by Remick Music Corporation of New York. It is written for piano duet, four hands, in the key of F major.

The opening melody is identical to the opening melody of the much earlier Irish folksong “Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms”, which was collected by Edward Bunting in 1792.
