Spirit Adrift- Divided By Darkness

Spirit Adrift’s “Divided By Darkness” is one of the best metal albums of 2020. It is a perfect blend of catchy hooks, thunderous riffs, and soul-crushing melodies. The lyrics are dark and introspective, and the vocals are absolutely superb. If you are a fan of heavy metal music, then this is an album that you need to check out.

Gatecreeper- An Unexpected Reality

On their third full-length, An Unexpected Reality, Arizona death metal outfit Gatecreeper prove that they are one of the most consistent and punishing bands in the genre today. Building on the bone-crushing template of prior releases Sonoran Depravation and Deserted, this album is a masterclass in addictive riffage, pummeling percussion, and snarling vocals, with just enough melodic embellishment to keep things interesting. Opener “From Beyond” sets the tone perfectly, with a huge groove underpinning guitars that slice through the thick air like twin buzzsaws. From there, it’s a nonstop assault of jaw-dropping riffs and rhythms, with standouts like “Wanton Violence,” “Miasma,” and “Languish” leaving listeners battered and bruised. But it’s the band’s closer, the nine-minute behemoth “Desolation,” that really leaves its mark, showcasing Gatecreeper’s ability to sustain interest over the course of an extended track. Whether you’re a diehard death metal fan or just someone looking for a well-executed example of extreme music, An Unexpected Reality is an album you won’t want to miss.
