Slayer is an American thrash metal band from Huntington Park, California. The band was formed in 1981 by guitarist Kerry King and drummer Dave Lombardo. Slayer rose to fame with their 1986 release Reign in Blood, and is credited as one of the big four thrash metal bands, along with Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Since its debut album in 1983, the band has released fifteen studio albums, two live albums, a box set, six video albums, forty-nine singles, nineteen promotional singles and thirty-six music videos. Slayer has received five Grammy nominations, winning one in 2007 for the song “Eyes of the Insane”, from 2006’s Christ Illusion; the song had previously been nominated for a Grammy in 2006 for “Best Metal Performance”.

Slayer’s musical style involves fast tremolo picking, double bass drumming, and shouted vocals. In the original line-up King and Hanneman were joined by vocalist/bassist Jeff Hanneman and bassist/vocalist Tom Araya. Currently only King and Araya remain from the original line-up; Holt joined in 2001 as the replacement for Hanneman while drummer Pau l Bostaph was a member from 1994–1996 and again from 2013–present; he temporarily filled in for Lombardo when he first left Slayer in 1992 before being replaced by Jon Dette as Slayer toured on that year’s War Against Satan tour. Guitarist Gary Holt has been a member of Exodus since 1981 and was officially announced as Hanneman’s replacement on June 6, 2011.

As of May 2019, Slayer will have completed their final world tour which began on May 10 at the Phoenix Open Air Festivalin Germany followed by headlining dates across Europe until June 30 at Download Festivalin France; they will tour North America from July 26 to August 26 with support from Lamb of God (who will feature Mark Morton filling in for guitarist Willie Adler), Anthraxand Behemothand then play two Australian shows supporting Slipknotat Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on October 23 & 24 respectively before playing back-to-back nights at Ozzfest Japanon November 11 & 12 at Makuhari Messein Tokyo.

The first stable line-up consisted of Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (guitar, vocals), Bill Wyman (bass), Charlie Watts (drums), and Ian Stewart (piano). Stewart was removed from the official line-up in 1963 but continued to work with the band as a contracted musician until his death in 1985. The band’s primary songwriters, Jagger and Richards, assumed leadership after Andrew Loog Oldham became their manager. Jones left the band less than a month prior to his death in 1969, having already been replaced by Mick Taylor, who remained until 1974. After Taylor’s departure, Ronnie Wood took his place in 1975 and has been on guitar ever since. Since Wyman’s departure in 1993, Darryl Jones has served as touring bassist.
