What is Indie Rock Music?

Indie rock is a genre of popular music that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1970s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or indie rock. In the 1980s, the use of the term “indie” began to shift from its reference to recording companies to describe style, particularly in the US, where it came to be used to describe a distinctive genre of guitar-based, melodic pop music with a post-punk sensibility. By 1985, indie had come to mean something broader: “a socio-cultural aesthetic”, according to writer John Robb.
