The Indie Rock Music Video Machine in the Desert is a blog about making music videos on a budget.

The Location

The music video for “The Indie Rock Music Video Machine in the Desert” was filmed in the desert outside of Los Angeles, California. The location was chosen for its otherworldly feel and its proximity to the city.

The Joshua Tree in the Mojave Desert

Just an hour outside of Los Angeles, in the high desert of the Mojave, lies Joshua Tree National Park. This magical place is home to a vast and diverse array of plants and animals, as well as some of the most iconic rock formations in the world. It’s also the setting for a new music video machine that is making waves in the indie rock scene.

The brainchild of musician and filmmaker Mauricio Perlaza, the Indie Rock Music Video Machine is a one-of-a-kind project that brings together musicians from all over the world to create unique music videos in one of the most beautiful and inspiring places on earth.

Perlaza came up with the idea for the project after spending time filming music videos in Joshua Tree for his own band, Dreamcars. “I was struck by how amazing and otherworldly this place is,” he says. “It’s like you’ve stepped into another world.”

After returning home to Los Angeles, Perlaza began reaching out to other bands and artists that he thought would be a good fit for the project. The response was overwhelming, and before long he had a roster of over 30 bands lined up to participate.

Each band spends one week in Joshua Tree, living and working out of a remote desert cabin. With Perlaza’s help, they plan and shoot a music video, drawing inspiration from their surroundings. The resulting videos are as diverse as the bands themselves, but all feature Joshua Tree prominently as both a backdrop and a character in its own right.

“It’s been so incredible to see how each band has interpreted this place,” says Perlaza. “Some videos are really lighthearted and fun, others are more meditative or introspective. But they all capture the magic of Joshua Tree in their own way.”

The Indie Rock Music Video Machine has quickly become one of the most talked-about projects in the indie rock world, and Perlaza is already planning for its next phase. He hopes to expand beyond music videos and into other forms of art and media that can showcase Joshua Tree’s unique beauty to even wider audiences.

“This place has such an important story to tell,” he says. “I want to keep finding new ways to share that story with people.”

The Music Video Machine

In the desert, there is a machine that churns out music videos for indie rock bands. The machine is operated by a man named Bob. He has a passion for music and for making videos.

A converted school bus

In the parched landscape of Joshua Tree, there sits a Music Video Machine. It’s a converted school bus, and it’s the dream of filmmaker Levi Prater. For a while now, he’s been traveling around to music festivals and making music videos for up-and-coming bands. But what sets his operation apart is that he films everything inside the bus, which he’s kitted out with professional lights and a green screen.

The result is a series of unique and stylish music videos, each one capturing the energy and excitement of the band in question. But more than that, they’re also a great way for Levi to meet new people and see new places. “I just love meeting new bands and hearing their stories,” he says. “And I love being able to travel to all these different places and see all these different sights.”

If you’re an indie band looking for an inventive and original music video, then Levi is your man. And if you happen to be passing through Joshua Tree, make sure you drop by the Music Video Machine – you might just end up on camera!
