The Beach Boys

The Beach Boys are an American rock band formed in Hawthorne, California, in 1961. The group’s original lineup consisted of brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and their friend Al Jardine. Distinguished by their vocal harmonies and early surf songs, they are one of the most influential acts of the rock era. The band drew on the music of earlier pop vocal groups, 1950s rock and roll, and black R&B to create their unique sound, and with numerous hits including “Surfin’ Safari” (1962), “Fun Fun Fun” (1964), “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” (1966), “Good Vibrations” (1966) and “Kokomo” (1988), they continue to enjoy commercial success.

The Beatles

The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. The group, whose best-known lineup comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, became widely regarded as the foremost and most influential music band of the 20th century. Rooted in skiffle and 1950s rock and roll, the Beatles later experimented with several genres, ranging from pop ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock, often incorporating classical elements and unconventional recording techniques in innovative ways. In 1963, their enormous popularity first emerged as “Beatlemania”; as the group’s music grew in sophistication following their 1964 debut album, Please Please Me, the band were integral to pop music’s evolution into an art form and to the development of the counterculture of the 1960s.

After the band’s break-up in 1970, all four members enjoyed successful musical careers of varying lengths. McCartney and Starr remain active; Harrison died of cancer in 2001.

The Byrds

The Byrds were an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1964. The band underwent multiple lineup changes throughout its existence, with frontman Roger McGuinn (known as Jim McGuinn until mid-1967) being the sole consistent member. Although they only managed to attain the huge commercial success of contemporaries like the Beach Boys and the Beatles, the Byrds are today considered by many to be nearly as influential as those bands. Their signature blend of clear harmony singing and McGuinn’s jangly twelve-string Rickenbacker guitar was immediately absorbed into the musical vocabulary of popular culture and has ensured their lasting popularity.
