Background

The Latin Grammy Awards are an annual award show that features Latin music. The show was established in 2000 and is broadcasted on the television network Univision. The show is produced by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.

History

The Latin Grammy Awards were established in 2000 by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences of the United States to recognize “Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking recordings in various genres worldwide”. Since 2001, the award ceremony has been held annually at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

In 2000 and 2001, 20 awards were presented each year, increasing to 34 in 2002. In 2003 and 2004, 39 awards were presented each year; from 2005 to 2007, 44 awards were presented annually; from 2008 onward, 58 awards are given out each year. The American Latin music media company Latin Billboard publishes an annual ranking of Top 100 Spanish Language albums and songs in the United States.

The Premio lo Nuestro Awards is a salsa music award ceremony that has been held annually since 1985 by television network Univision. It is considered to be one of the most prestigious music events for Spanish-speaking entertainers in the United States.

The Latin Grammy Awards are awarded every year by The Latin Recording Academy (LARAS). Established in 1997, LARAS began as an offshoot of The Recording Academy—the organization that also gives out the Grammy Awards—but whereas Grammys recognize excellence in all genres of music recorded in English, LARAS instead focuses on Spanish- and Portuguese-language recordings.
