Introduction

Latin music is a genre of music that is often associated with the passions, energy and sensuality of its place of origin: Latin America. It encompasses a wide variety of styles, from the lilting ballads of Mexico to the fiery Afro-Cuban beats of Cuba, from the smooth bossa novas of Brazil to the hot-blooded tangos of Argentina.

Although its roots are in Latin America, Latin music has been hugely popular in the United States for many years. In fact, some of the most successful and influential musicians in American history have been of Latin descent, including such legends as Cuban-born Desi Arnaz, Puerto Rican-born Rita Hayworth and Mexican-American Benny Goodman.

Latin music enjoyed a huge surge in popularity in the United States during the 1940s and 1950s thanks to a new wave of Latino immigrants who brought their musical traditions with them. The new style of music they created, which blended traditional Latin sounds with American pop and jazz, came to be known as “salsa” (a word that simply means “sauce” in Spanish but which has come to represent this unique style of music).

Salsa quickly became hugely popular among both Latinos and non-Latinos alike, and its popularity has only continued to grow in the years since. Today, salsa is just one of many different genres that make up the vibrant tapestry of Latin music in the United States.
