There are also several new features in this game. One is the rock-climbing ability, which isn’t available in any other game in the series.

The inclusion of the hang glider and underwater driving segments add a new layer of challenge and excitement to each course. Overall, the game is incredibly fun, and it’s one of the best titles in the series.”

Modes

There are four modes in Mario Kart 7: Grand Prix, Time Trial, Balloon Battle, and Shell Cup.

Grand Prix is the main mode of the game. The player competes against eleven other racers in a cup, trying to earn the most points. The point system from previous installments returns, with first place earning 12 points, second place 10, third 8, fourth 7, fifth 6, and so on down to last place, which awards 3 points. The player’s final point score is multiplied by the number of stars they have earned in order to determine their final ranking for the cup; the possible multipliers are 2x (one star), 1.5x (two stars), and 1x (three stars). In addition to points, players also earn coins as they race. These can be spent on unlocking new karts and customization options.

Reception

Critics were positive towards the game’s music. In his 3DS review, Joe Juba of Game Informer praised how “the soundtrack [..] is one of the best in the series”, and found that “the addition of classic Nintendo tunes as remixed by popular band Yasutaka Nakata makes menus and victory screens all the more celebratory”. The A.V. Club’s Nathan Rabin called the original songs “rocking, diverse, and unforgettable”, further writing that they “remind us that videogame music can be made by talented human beings, not just faceless corporate robots”. However, Rabin was less fond of theifting from other games in the series, writing that it was an example of “how sequels often rely on aping instead of innovating”.
