This is Spinal Tap

This is Spinal Tap, commonly referred to as Spinal Tap, is a 1984 American rockumentary comedy film directed and co-written by Rob Reiner. The film documents the fictional English heavy metal band Spinal Tap, composed of lead vocalist and guitarist David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) and drummer Compact Disc “NAT” Jive (R. J. Parnell).

The film satirizes the behavior and musical pretensions of hard rock bands and their fans, as well as the clichés of rock documentaries such as Gimme Shelter (1970) and This Year’s Model (1978). Most of its dialogue was improvised based on outlines created by Reiner, Guest, Shearer and McKean.

The three main actors were credited as themselves; however, Tufnel was listed in the credits as “Spinal Tap”. Reiner appears briefly as Marty DiBergi, a documentary filmmaker recording the band’s tour. Several notable music artists appear as themselves including David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Ronnie James Dio, Ian Paice, Marty Friedman from Megadeth, Mick Fleetwood from Fleetwood Mac among others.

Spinal Tap was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Original Screenplay for Guest, Shearer and McKean; and Best Sound Mixing for Ron Ludman and Elliott Lickman. It lost both awards to Amadeus (1984) which also won Best Picture. In 2002 the United States Library of Congress deemed This is Spinal Tap “culturally significant” and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.
