It’s been an amazing year for psychedelic rock, with new music from some of the genre’s biggest names, as well as some exciting new talents. Here, we’ve collected the best new psychedelic rock of 2016, from classic-sounding revivalists to experimental artists pushing the boundaries of the genre.
The Growlers
The Growlers are a band from Orange County, California, who describe their music as “beach goth.” The band’s sound has been compared to a number of genres, including garage rock, surf rock, and psychedelic rock.
The Growlers were formed in 2006 by singer/guitarist Brooks Nielsen and lead guitarist Matt Taylor. The band has released six albums, three of which have been released on major label Fat Cat Records. The Growlers’ most recent album, “Chinese Fountain,” was released in 2014 and peaked at #17 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.
The Growlers are known for their lively stage shows and rowdy behavior. In 2012, the band was arrested for urinating on the stage during a show in Las Vegas. In 2015, the band was again arrested for disorderly conduct after Nielsen punched a hole in a hotel room door.
Despite their penchant for trouble, The Growlers have become one of the most popular new bands in the psychedelic rock scene. Their unique blend of genres and catchy melodies has won them a devoted following among fans of independent music.
Thee Oh Sees
Thee Oh Sees are an American rock band from San Francisco, California, formed in 1997. The current line-up consists of primary songwriter and core member John Dwyer (lead vocals, guitar), Tim Hellman (bass), Dan Rincon (drums) and Erica Freas (keyboards, vocals).Since its inception the band has released seventeen albums, two mini-albums, one live album and one split album.
Ty Segall
Ty Segall is an American musician, singer-songwriter and record producer. He is best known for his solo work, during which he has collaborated with various musical artists. His music is characterized by its diverse genre influences, including garage rock, punk rock, folk rock, R&B and blues. Segall’s musical style has been likened to that of music icons such as the Beatles, the Stooges and Pink Floyd.
Segall began his musical career playing in various underground bands in Orange County and San Francisco. In 2008, he released his debut solo album, Ty Segall. Since then, he has released eight solo albums, two live albums and two collaborative albums. His latest album, Emotional Mugger, was released in 2016 to critical acclaim.

The Growlers
Formed in 2006 in Dana Point, California, The Growlers are a psych-rock band that blends ’60s surf pop with gritty garage rock. The band consists of singer/guitarist Brooks Nielsen, bassist Matt Taylor, keyboardist Kyle Straka, and drummer Scott Montoya.
The Growlers have released six studio albums, with their 2016 album City Club reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Albums chart. Their sound has been described as “a hazy blend of reverb-drenched surf rock and ’60s garage punk.”
The Growlers are currently signed to Cult Records, and have released two singles from their upcoming album Casual Acquaintances, “I’ll Be Around” and “Problems III”.
Thee Oh Sees
Thee Oh Sees are an American rock band from San Francisco, California, formed in 1997. The current lineup consists of primary songwriter and core member John Dwyer (lead vocals, guitars), Brigid Dawson (vocals, keyboards, tambourine), Timothy Mountain (bass) and Dan Rincon (drums). The band has been through several changes in personnel and genres throughout its existence, making it hard to pigeonhole their sound.
Thee Oh Sees began as an electronic solo project of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist John Dwyer. After releasing a handful of singles and two albums under the name Orinoka Crash Suite, Dwyer expanded the project into a full-fledged band, adding bassist Brad Cohan and drummer Andrew simpledrummerudonEventuelly joining them were second guitarist Petey Dammit and keyboardist Chris Woodhouse. This lineup recorded the group’s first proper album, The Master’s Bedroom Is Worth Spending A Night In (2006).
Ty Segall
San Francisco’s Ty Segall has been one of the most prolific and consistent garage rock forces for over a decade. His self-titled album from earlier this year might be his catchiest and most accessible yet, full of chiming power pop hooks and anthemic choruses delivered with Segall’s trademark wry observational wit. While Segall’s music has always had a psychedelic edge, it’s never been as overt as on singles like “Breakfast Eggs” and “Fanny Dog,” which both nod to classic 60s psychedelia while sounding resolutely modern.
