Much of the Western sacred music tradition is in Latin. Why is this? There are a number of reasons, both historical and practical. Latin is a beautiful language that is particularly well suited to religious texts. It is also a language that is relatively easy to sing, making it ideal for choirs. And finally, Latin is a language that is understood by people of many different cultures, making it a good choice for music that will be performed in a international context.
