The Early Years

Music Soul Child: The Book is a detailed look into the life and work of the iconic R&B singer, Music Soul Child. The book chronicles her early years, starting from her humble beginnings in the music industry to her eventual rise to superstardom.

The Making of a Star

Music Soul Child, aka Marques Houston, was born on August 4, 1981, in Los Angeles, California. The third of four children, he grew up in a strict Baptist household headed by his mother and stepfather. Despite their religious beliefs, his parents were very supportive of his musical talents and often took him to local Gospel concerts. Houston began singing at the age of five in his church choir and by the time he was eleven, he had formed a Gospel group with some friends. They called themselves IMx (pronounced “I-M-X”), and they went on to release two albums under the banner of Virgin Records.

In 2001, Houston decided to pursue a solo career and released his debut album, MH. The album was a mix of R&B and Pop that appealed to a wide audience; it eventually went on to sell over two million copies worldwide. MH featured the hit single “That Girl”, which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Over the next few years, Houston released two more albums – Naked (2003) and Somebody Loves You Back (2010) – both of which were critical and commercial successes. In 2012, Houston announced that he was taking a break from music to focus on acting; he has since appeared in several movies and television shows.

The First Album

Music Soul Child’s self-titled debut album was released in November of 1995. The album featured the hit single “Maybe” which peaked at number 4 on the Billboard R&B singles chart. The album was certified gold by the RIAA in February of 1996.

The Second Album

The second album, simply titled Music Soul Child, was released on June 30, 1998. The album peaked at number five on the Billboard 200 and at number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, selling over three million copies in the United States. It generated the number-one singles “Buddy X” and “If You Believe” as well as the top ten single “Hoy te Dejo en Libertad”. In 1999, Shepherd won two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for Music Soulchild.

The Later Years

The early period of a musician’s career is often the most creative and productive. But what happens when the Muse starts to play hard to get? In “The Later Years”, Music Soul Child looks at the question from the perspective of some of the most venerable artists in the business.

The Third Album

The Third Album was released on August 27, 2001. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling over 240,000 copies in its first week. It was their first and only album to be produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The album featured the hit singles “Dont Say Goodbye”, “Wish I Never Met You”, and “Superstar”.

The Fourth Album

After the release of their fourth album, the group took a hiatus to focus on solo projects. During this time, Rumour Has It was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In 2004, they released their fifth album, Jus’ leave, which was not as successful as previous albums and only reached number 33 on the Soul/R&B Albums chart. Shortly after its release, they were dropped from their record label. In 2006, they signed with Image Entertainment and released their sixth and final album The Return. The album failed to chart.

The Fifth Album

In 2006, Blige released her fifth album, The Breakthrough. It was her most successful album to date, selling 2.5 million copies in its first week and being certified double Platinum by the RIAA in the United States. The Breakthrough was nominated for eight Grammy Awards, winning three, including Best Contemporary R&B Album. It also earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Original Song for “The Crown”.
