What is dubstep?

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London in the late 1990s. It is generally characterized by sparse, syncopated rhythmic patterns with prominent sub-bass frequencies.

The style emerged as an offshoot of UK garage, drawing on a lineage of related styles such as 2-step and dub reggae. In the early 2000s, the term “dubstep” began to be increasingly used to describe a broader range of related sonic aesthetics, sometimes described as “post-dubstep”.

One of the earliest dubstep tracks was “Benga Benga” by Benga, which was released on an EP by Big Apple Records in 2002. The song featured a central bassline that emphasized the lower frequencies of the bass guitar, as well as sparse two-step rhythms.

In recent years, dubstep has been increasingly incorporated into other genres of music such as hip hop, pop and R&B. One notable example is DJ and producer Zedd’s 2013 single “Clarity”, which reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and won a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.
