J. Cole- “False Prophets”

On “False Prophets,” J. Cole addresses those who doubted him on his road to success, specifically referencing a “false prophet” who gave him advice early on in his career. The rapper also takes shots at celebrities like Kanye West and Waka Flocka Flame, who he feels are putting on a false persona for the public. In the second verse, Cole reflects on how materialistic values can cloud one’s judgment, and how he’s happy to have made it out alive despite the temptations of street life.

Big Sean- “Bounce Back”

After what many considered a lackluster 2016, Big Sean kicks off the new year with his new single, “Bounce Back.” The Metro Boomin & E-40 assisted track is the first single off Sean’s upcoming LP, I Decided.

“Bounce Back” finds Sean in his feelings after a relationship gone awry. E-40 opens the track with some hilarious relationship advice (“She hit you with that ‘I need some space’ / Tell that bitch it ain’t no Se7en days / You f*cked up and now she leavin’ / All them other niggas she was receivin’ / Now she thinkin’ that she made a mistake and she trippin'”), over a synth-laden beat courtesy of Metro Boomin. Sean then proceeds to promise his woman that he will change for the better (“I been working on my shyt, I know I ain’t been actin’ right”).

While it remains to be seen if “Bounce Back will be one of the biggest tracks of the new year, it definitely has the potential. Welcome back, Sean Don.
