Critical Reception

Newsted’s debut album, Heavy Metal Music, was met with mixed reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 53, based on four reviews.

AllMusic’s Gregory Heaney wrote that the album “mines a more traditionally metallic sound than one might expect from the former Metallica bassist” and found its songs to be “a little too well-crafted for their own good”. He praised Jason Newsted’s “impressively forceful” vocal performance and the band’s musicianship, but criticised the album’s lyrical themes, writing that they “follow in the footsteps of so many metal albums before it: theyre juvenile, cartoonish, and more concerned with partying than anything else”. Consequence of Sound’s Kevin McMahon was more favourable in his review, writing that the album is “a well-balanced record that touches on all aspects of modern hard rock without neglecting Newsted’s well-documented metal roots”.

Commercial Reception

Newsted’s Heavy Metal Music was met with mixed to positive reviews from professional music critics. Upon its release, the album sold 3,500 copies in its first week and debuted at position No. 72 on the Billboard 200 chart. In October 2013, the album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments exceeding 500,000 copies.

Some critics praised Newsted’s return to straightforward heavy metal music. AllMusic’s Greg Prato wrote that “any fan of Jason Newsted’s prior work with Metallica and Voivod should definitely give Heavy Metal Music a listen.” Michael Roffman from Consequence of Sound also noted that Newsted had gone “back to basics” with the album. Bret Harding from Louder Sound opined that despite some “filler” tracks, Heavy Metal Music was “a strong comeback” for Newsted.

However, other reviewers were more critical of the album.Metal Hammer ‘s Dom Lawson gave the album two-and-a-half stars out of five and felt that it was “an intensely average record”. Pitchfork Media ‘s Grayson Currin was less forgiving, writing that Heavy Metal Music was “a bummer – a self-serious, scattershotppo affair as watery as it is obvious.”
