Introduction

Funk is a genre of music that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It is characterized by a strong groove, often with a driving bassline. The lyrics are often sexually suggestive or social commentary.

There are many different subgenres of funk, including P-Funk, which was popularized by Parliament-Funkadelic; smooth funk, which is characterized by soulful vocals; and disco-funk, which is a blend of disco and funk.

The following music videos represent some of the best old school funk songs.

The band performed and recorded their own songs as well as the songs of other artists, including Allen Toussaint, Robert Palmer, Dr. John, and The Rolling Stones.

The Meters had a long-standing relationship with The Rolling Stones, for whom they served as both opening act and backing band on several US tours between 1969 and 1974. In 1975, they released their fifth studio album, Rejuvenation, which included the hit single “Hey Pocky A-Way”.

The Meters disbanded in 1977, but have reformed several times since then. In 1996, they were inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
