“The Marriage of Figaro”

The Marriage of Figaro is an opera buffa (comic opera) in four acts composed in 1786 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with an Italian libretto written by Lorenzo Da Ponte. The libretto was based on a stage comedy by Pierre Beaumarchais, La folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro (1784), which was banned in Vienna during the lifetime of bothPushin da Ponte and Mozart. It tells how the servants Figaro and Susanna triumph over the Count Almaviva’s attempt to seduce Susanna and foil his schemes to demean them.

“Don Giovanni”

“Don Giovanni” is an opera in two acts with music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. It is based on the legends of Don Juan, a fictional libertine and seducer.

The piece was originally performed in October of 1787, just four months prior to Mozart’s death in December, at the National Theatre in Prague. “Don Giovanni” was immensely popular throughout most of the 19th century and continues to be one of the most often performed operas today.

“Carmen” was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on March 3, 1875, and was not well received. Critics condemned the work’s lack of traditional heroic themes and denounced its depiction of gypsies as thieves and prostitutes. However, the public loved it, and “Carmen” soon became one of the most popular operas in history. Today, it is one of the most frequently performed operas in the world.
