Based on true events, The Falling & The Rising tells the story of First Lieutenant Weston C. Kuenneke, a twenty-six-year-old Army officer who was killed in action in Iraq on April 6, 2004. Lt. Kuenneke was serving as a platoon leader with the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team when his unit was ambushed while conducting combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The opera follows Lt. Kuenneke’s journey from his final moments before the ambush, through his death and resurrection as he returns home to his grieving wife and family. The Falling & The Rising is an intimate portrait of loss, love, and hope that explores the human capacity for resilience in the face of tragedy.
