History of the Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. It was first published in serial form in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909, to January 8, 1910. The novel was published in volume form in 1910 by Pierre Lafitte.

The novel is partly inspired by historical events at the Paris Opera during the nineteenth century and an opera called Hannibal by Victor Hugo. Leroux also drew inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Fall of the House of Usher” and Gaston Escaich’s La Danse Macabre.

The novel tells the story of a mysterious character known as the Phantom who lives in the catacombs of the Paris Opera House and wreaks havoc on those who try to cross him. The novel features two nominees for best actor at the Paris Opera: Raoul de Chagny and Christine Daaé. Christine is lulled into a false sense of security by the Phantom’s music and becomes his captive. Raoul, her childhood sweetheart, tries to rescue her but ends up getting caught in the Phantom’s trap himself.

The novel has been adapted into numerous films, most notably Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical version, which debuted on Broadway in 1988.
