Gerard Butler as the Phantom

The Gerard Butler version of The Phantom of the Opera movie is a must-have CD for all fans of the musical. The movie was directed by Joel Schumacher and released in 2004. It starred Gerard Butler as the Phantom and Emmy Rossum as Christine.

Gerard’s performance as the Phantom

Gerard’s performance as the Phantom was spectacular. I was so impressed with his acting, singing, and overall presence on stage. The movie was very well done and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves Phantom of the Opera or Gerard Butler.

The movie’s plot

The Phantom of the Opera is a 2004 American musical drama film based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical of the same name, which in turn is based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra. Directed by Joel Schumacher, it stars Gerard Butler as the Phantom, Emmy Rossum as Christine Daaé, and Patrick Wilson as Raoul Vicomte de Chagny.

The film was produced by Lloyd Webber and Schumacher for The Phantom of the Opera Productions Ltd., with Warner Bros. distributing. Rehearsals for the film began in mid-2003, at Pinewood Studios in London; shooting commenced on December 6 of that year and ended on February 25, 2004. Filming mostly took place at Pinewood Studios in London with some footage being shot at Shepperton Studios in Surrey and a Parisian cafe scene being filmed in Bar-le-Duc, France; sets were also constructed at Pinewood for the Paris Opera House and sealed lairs beneath it.

More than 200 actors were considered for parts in the film ranging from phantom to chorus roles including Jim Caviezel and Michael Crawford who had played Erik/the Phantom before; however, both men had schedules that prevented them from being cast. Gerard Butler was cast as Erik/the Phantom after months of pursuing the role while Hugh Jackman turned down an offer to play Vicomte Raoul de Chagny due to scheduling conflicts with his role as Logan/Wolverine in Fox’s X-Men franchise films. Principal photography took approximately three months (106 days) to complete while post-production lasted longer due to singer Emmy Rossum age at 18 playing a 17 year old character instead of filming everything out of sequence like most musicals do so her voice did not change too much during production due to age until they finished recording later that year.

The movie was released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 30, 2005 by Warner Home Video. Although it received generally negative reviews from critics – Rossum’s performance garnered acclaim – it failed to make a significant impact at the box office earning total revenue $154 million compared to its $70 million budget making it unprofitable but still managinge to become one of 2004’s top fifty highest-grossing films worldwide.
