The Weasel
Pop Goes the Weasel is a popular English nursery rhyme and tune. It has a Roud Folk Song Index number of 5249.
The lyrics are usually about a man who loses his coat to “a weasel”, although alternative versions also exist. A weasel is a small mammal of the genus Mustela, related to the ferret.
The rhyme was first printed in England in 1853 in a songbook called Melodious Songs for the Little Ones at Home. The most commonly used version was first printed in 1881, but it is possible that some of the older versions may be closer to the original.
There are many variations of the tune, and it is often used in other songs and Nursery Rhymes, such as “Hickory Dickory Dock” and “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush”.
