The station shifted to a soft adult contemporary format as “The New B104.5” on August 29, 1988. At midnight on Christmas Eve 1990, after stunting with a continuous loop of “Auld Lang Syne,” B104.5 became “Hot 104.5,” Houston’s first FM hip-hop station.

Pop music

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the United States and United Kingdom during the mid-1950s. The terms “popular music” and “pop music” are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular and includes many different styles. During the 1950s and 1960s, pop music constantly evolved along with the term’s definition. According to Grove Music Online, rock and pop music are distinct genres within popular music. They display different characteristics including time-displacement (e.g., live radio broadcasts of recorded music on the air), tonality (e.g., major or minor), melody (e.g., doo-wop), and harmony (e.g., country). Additionally, rock and pop have often been stylistically distinguished from other popular genres such as soul and R&B; however, rock and roll has frequently incorporated elements of both genres.(1) Pop music has absorbed influences from most other forms of popular music, especially from the development of rock during the 1950s.(2)

It typically consists of a verse chorus structure with repeated choruses being delineated by Banks’ “eight-bar” formula.(3) However, pop songs may also employ bridge sections that contrast with the verse or Chorus.(4) In some cases, already establishedVS= lead sheets were adapted for mass singalong performance in Roman Catholic Churches(5), as was done famously by James Lord Pierpont’s 1857 holiday tune “Jingle Bells”,(6) though generally alternative lyrics were composed for these settings.(7) Pie Jesu Domine appears in a number of medieval settings, including one by Guillaume Dufay(8), while Dame da la mer is known from at least two composers in the 16th century.(9) The popularity of these works demonstrates that even after four centuries correct vocalisation was still an important element in drawing an audience to musical performances.(10)

During the 1980s synth-pop developed new wave styles such as new romanticism and post-punk which blended into each other over time to create what was essentially one big genre rather than two separate genres at that point in history.(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16). In Japan, Yellow Magic Orchestra’s successful use of synthesizers in their album Technodelic led to the subsequent popularity of city pop which was a fusion genre that drew upon a range of other genres including soul, disco, R&B & new wave & boogie & post-disco & Italo disco & Euro disco & space disco & nu-disco & funk & synth-funk . City pop artists such as Takashi Hosokawa would later go on to influence Shibuya-kei artists such as Flipper’s Guitar who would incorporate more guitar sounds into their own version of city pop which would become known as Japanoise.(17).(18). In South Korea K-pop artists such as Seo Taiji and Boys helped usher in a new wave style known as rap dance which would also be popularised by American rap artists such as MC Hammer whose hit song “U Can’t Touch This” utilised similar sound samples to Seo Taiji’s song “I Know”.(19)(20)
