A look at how Pop Music has changed over the years, as seen through the eyes of the Wordle.

Introduction

In Wordle, the size of a word corresponds to how often it is used in the text. The purpose of this analysis is to compare the lyrics of popular songs from different decades and to see if there are any differences in the use of words.

I collected the lyrics of ten popular songs from each decade, starting with the 1950s. I then created a Wordle for each song. To compare the words used in each decade, I created a word cloud that includes all of the words from the song lyrics. The results are shown below.

As can be seen, there are some clear differences in the words used in popular songs from different decades. In general, the songs from more recent decades use more positive and upbeat words, while the songs from earlier decades use more negative and melancholic words.

What is a Wordle?

A Wordle is a word cloud. It’s a way of visualizing text data, and it can be used to analyze and explore the frequencies of words in a body of text.

How can Wordles be used to analyze pop music?

One way to analyze pop music is to examine the lyrics and look for patterns. This can be done using a program called Wordle, which creates “word clouds” based on the frequencies of words used in a text.

To use Wordle, you simply paste in the lyrics of a song (or any other text) and it will create a word cloud based on the most common words. You can then adjust the settings to change the size, color, and layout of the word cloud.

Looking at word clouds for pop songs can give you a quick way to see what themes are being repeated across many songs. For example, if you paste in the lyrics of several current pop songs, you might notice that love, heart, and baby are among the most common words. This could suggest that love is a major theme in current pop music.

Of course, word clouds are just one way to analyze pop music. They can be used to quickly see patterns, but they don’t give you the full picture. For a more in-depth analysis, you’ll need to examine the lyrics more closely.

What do Wordles reveal about pop music?

Pop music is often criticized for being lightweight and catchy, but not particularly meaningful. But a close analysis of the lyrics of popular songs can reveal some interesting trends and insights.

One way to analyze the lyrics of pop songs is to create a Wordle, which is a graphical representation of the most frequently used words in a body of text. The wordle below shows the most common words used in the lyrics of pop songs from 2010-2015.

Some of the most common words in pop song lyrics are love, heart, baby, night, and know. These words are all associated with emotions, which suggests that pop music is primarily concerned with love and relationships. Other common themes include dancing, partying, and having fun.

So what do Wordles reveal about pop music? They suggest that pop music is primarily concerned with love and relationships, and that it is about having fun and enjoying life.
