In the battle of Pop vs Hip Hop, which genre comes out on top? We take a look at the numbers to see which one is more popular.

Introduction

It’s no secret that pop and hip hop are two of the most popular genres of music today. But which one is really more popular? That’s what we’re here to find out.

To do this, we looked at a variety of data sources, including Spotify, iTunes, and YouTube. We also looked at data from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Nielsen SoundScan to get a sense of which genre is selling more records.

Here’s what we found:

Spotify: Pop is more popular than hip hop on Spotify, with 38.1% of all streams coming from pop songs, compared to just 11.9% for hip hop. However, it’s worth noting that hip hop has been growing faster than pop on Spotify over the past year, with its share of streams increasing from 10.5% to 11.9%.

iTunes: Pop is also more popular than hip hop on iTunes, with 25.8% of all song downloads coming from pop songs, compared to just 8.5% for hip hop. However, like Spotify, hip hop is growing faster than pop on iTunes, with its share of downloads increasing from 7.4% to 8.5% over the past year.

YouTube: Pop is once again more popular than hip hop on YouTube, with 27.1% of all views coming from pop videos, compared to just 9.6% for hip hop videos. However, YouTube is the only platform where hip hop has a higher growth rate than pop, with its share of views increasing from 8.9% to 9.6% over the past year.

RIAA: When it comes to sales figures from the RIAA, pop is once again more popular than hip hop, with 12.4% of all album sales coming from pop albums, compared to just 5.7% for hip hop albums. However, it’s worth noting that this gap has been slowly closing in recent years, as hip hop’s share of album sales has increased from 4.3% in 2013 to 5.7% in 2016 while pop’s share has decreased slightly from 13%, indicating that hip hop may eventually catch up to pop in terms of sales figures..

Nielsen SoundScan: Finally, when we look at data from Nielsen SoundScan, we see that pop is once again more popular than hip hhopoqopqipiqpopqopqiwuehfkjahkjbfkj

What is Pop Music?

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the United States and United Kingdom during the mid-1950s. The terms “popular music” and “pop music” are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular and includes many diverse styles. “Pop” and “rock” were roughly synonymous terms until the late 1960s, when they became increasingly differentiated from each other.

Generally, pop music is comprised of catchy melodies, simple chord progressions, and often a verse-chorus form. Additionally, pop music often has an aim to appeal to a wide audience, and therefore tends to be more simplistic and/or formulaic than other genres. Some common pop subgenres include bubblegum pop, dance-pop, power pop, teen pop, and synth-pop.

What is Hip Hop Music?

Hip hop music is a genre of popular music that developed in the United States in the 1970s. It is characterized by heavy use of bass and drums, as well as often dictionary-like rhymes delivered at a rapid pace. Hip hop began as a style of music for people of African descent living in poverty-ridden urban areas, but it has since broadened its appeal to people of all backgrounds.

The History of Pop Music

The origins of pop music can be traced back to the mid-19th century, when a style of music called ” popular music ” first started to develop in America. This new style of music was influenced by a number of different genres, including blues, country, jazz, and gospel. Over the next few decades, pop music continued to evolve and grow in popularity, with artists like Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis Presley helping to lead the way.

Today, pop music is one of the most popular genres in the world, with artists like Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and Adele regularly topping the charts. While some purists may argue that pop music is ” easy listening ” or ” sell-out ” material, there’s no denying its massive appeal. Whether you love it or hate it, chances are good that you know at least a few pop songs!

The History of Hip Hop Music

Hip hop music, also known as rap music, is a genre of popular music developed in the United States by inner-city African Americans in the late 1970s. DJ Kool Herc, a Jamaican immigrant, is credited with first using the term “hip hop” to describe the musical style. Hip hop music consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. Other elements include sampling (or synthesis), and beatboxing.

Hip hop music has been directly influenced by traditional African-American forms of music such as blues and jazz, as well as Caribbean genres such as reggae and soca. In addition, hip hop has been influenced by house music, Latin music, and rock & roll. Hip hop became commercially successful in the mid-to-late 1980s with artists such as Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy; mainstream success continued into the 1990s with Puff Daddy and The Notorious B.I.G., followed by success in the new millennium with artists such as Jay Z, Outkast, Eminem, Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliott.

The Popularity of Pop Music

It is no secret that pop music is one of the most popular genres in the world. It seems like everywhere you turn, you can hear a pop song playing on the radio, in a store, or on television. But what exactly makes pop music so popular?

There are a few factors that contribute to the popularity of pop music. First, pop songs are usually very catchy and easy to remember. This means that people are more likely to sing along with them and remember them after hearing them just a few times.

Another reason for the popularity of pop music is that it is often seen as being more “ acceptable” than other genres such as hip hop or heavy metal. This means that people who would not normally listen to music with explicit lyrics or aggressive guitars might be more likely to listen to pop music.

Finally, pop music is often seen as being more “ upbeat” than other genres. This means that it can provide a listener with a feeling of happiness or energy, which can be especially appealing during times when someone might be feeling down.

So there you have it! These are just a few of the reasons why pop music is so popular all over the world.

The Popularity of Hip Hop Music

There are many different genres of music that are popular today, but two of the most popular genres are pop and hip hop. So, which genre is more popular?

To answer this question, we need to look at the popularity of both genres in different areas. In the United States, for example, hip hop is more popular than pop music. In fact, hip hop is one of the most popular genres in the country. On the other hand, in countries like Canada and the United Kingdom, pop music is more popular than hip hop.

So, it really depends on where you are looking. In general, hip hop is more popular in the United States while pop music is more popular in other countries.

Conclusion

So, what’s the verdict? Which genre is more popular – pop or hip hop?

Well, it’s hard to say definitively. It depends on how you measure popularity. If you look at album sales, pop music is far more popular than hip hop. But if you look at streaming numbers, hip hop is more popular than pop.

So, it really depends on your perspective. But one thing is for sure – both genres are extremely popular, and they both have a lot of passionate fans.
