The Phantom of the Opera

Based on the 1910 French novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a masked figure who terrorizes the Paris Opera House, causing the deaths of many. The phantom falls in love with the opera house’s prima donna, Christine Daaé, and becomes obsessed with making her a star.

The Story

The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909, to January 8, 1910. The novel was published in book form in 1910.

The overall story unfolds in three main settings: the Paris Opera House during the 1870s, an auction house in 1889, and an unspecified location where the events surrounding Christine’s disappearance are related. Some of these locations are only briefly described while others are given more extended treatment. Leroux employs devices such as layered narratives and frame stories to increase his novel’s suspense and to aid in foreshadowing events that happen later in the narrative.
