Project 4-4: Setting a Constraint for the Don Funk Music Video
Contents
In this Project 4-4, we’ll be setting a constraint for the Don Funk music video. This will help us keep the video focused and on track. By following these best practices, you can create a quality video that meets your audience’s needs.
Introduction
In this project, you will watch a music video and then answer some questions about it. After you have watched the music video, reflect on the following questions. Then, write a brief essay (1-2 paragraphs) that discusses your thoughts on the role of constraints in the creative process.
Questions to Consider:
1. Did the artist use any constraints in the production of this music video?
2. If so, what impact did those constraints have on the final product?
3. Would the music video have been better or worse if the artist had not used any constraints?
4. How do you think the artist felt about working within constraints?
5. Do you think constraint can actually improve creative output? Why or why not?
From my observations, it appears that the artist did indeed use constraints in the production of this music video. Specifically, it seems as though they constricted themselves to using only two colors throughout the entire video – black and white. I think this had a profound impact on the final product because it added a level of simplicity and sophistication that may not have been there otherwise. Additionally, I think it helped to create a more unified look throughout the video.
I don’t necessarily believe that constraint improves creative output, but I do think it can help to focus one’s creativity and channel it in a certain direction. In this case, I think the constraint of using only two colors was successful in helping to create a more aesthetically pleasing and cohesive music video.
What is a Constraint?
A constraint is a limit on what you can do or a condition that must be met. When you’re planning something, setting constraints can help you focus your ideas and make sure you don’t get overwhelmed by possibilities.
For this project, you’ll need to choose one constraint to work within for your music video. That means you’ll need to decide on things like the location, the characters, the plot, and so on. To help you get started, we’ve listed some possible constraints below. Take a look and see if any of them inspire you!
-You can only film in one location.
-You can only use three colors.
-You have to film in black and white.
-You can only use objects that start with the letter B.
-You have to film in reversechronological order.
-You can only use shots that are close-ups.
Setting a Constraint for the Don Funk Music Video
In this project, you will create a storyboard for a music video. The song that you will be using is “Don’t Funk with My Heart” by the Black Eyed Peas. The purpose of this project is to give you an opportunity to practice setting a constraint for your creative work.
As you work on your storyboard, keep in mind that you will only have a budget of $100 to produce the entire music video. This includes the cost of hiring actors, renting equipment, and any other necessary expenses. With this in mind, you will need to be creative in how you tell the story while still staying within your budget.
Once you have completed your storyboard, be sure to submit it to your instructor for feedback.
Conclusion
In conclusion, by setting the constraint of using only one camera and two takes, the music video for “Don Funk” was able to meet all of the requirements while still being creative and unique. This video is an excellent example of how a constraint can actually lead to more creativity, not less.
