Psychedelic rock lyrics can be some of the most beautiful and poetic in all of music. Here are some of our favorites that we’d like to be!

The Beatles – “A Day in the Life”

I read the news today, oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph
He blew his mind out in a car
He didn’t notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They’d seen his face before
Nobody was really sure if he was from the house of lords

The Beach Boys – “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”

Wouldn’t it be nice if we were older
Then we wouldn’t have to wait so long
And wouldn’t it be nice to live together
In the kind of world where we belong

Oh wouldn’t it be nice
If we could wake up in the morning
When the day is new
And wouldn’t it be nice
To live together in the kind of world where we belong

Pink Floyd – “Brain Damage”

“The lunatic is on the grass,

The lunatic is on the grass.

Remembering games and daisy chains and laughs.
Got to keep the loonies on the path.”

The Doors – “The End”

“The End” is a song by The Doors, and the opening track from their self-titled debut album. The song starts with a slow, bluesy piano intro before the main riff kicks in. The lyrics are written from the perspective of someone who is tired of life and ready to die. The song builds to a massive crescendo, with singer Jim Morrison screaming “This is the end!” before the music abruptly stops. “The End” is one of The Doors’ most iconic songs, and has been covered by many artists over the years.

The Rolling Stones – “Paint It, Black”

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

I see a line of cars and they’re all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens every day
I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black

Jimi Hendrix – “All Along the Watchtower”

“There must be some kind of way out of here”
“Said the joker to the thief
“There’s too much confusion
I can’t get no relief
Businessmen, they drink my wine
Ploughmen dig my earth
None of them along the line
Know what any of it is worth”

Led Zeppelin – “Stairway to Heaven”

There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she’s buying a stairway to heaven.

There’s a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
‘Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook, there’s a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.

There are two paths you can go by but in the long run
There’s still time to change the road you’re on.

King Crimson – “21st Century Schizoid Man”

We need you
21st century schizoid man

We can’t get by
With just a single mind

We’ve really got to try
To be more than one kind

We’re all Schizoid now
And we don’t know how
To fix it

Yes – “Roundabout”

I’ll be the roundabout
The words will make you out ‘n’ out
I’ll be the roundabout
The just-a-coming-waitin’-for-you

Genesis – “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway”

“The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway” is a song by the English rock band Genesis. It was the title track to their 1974 album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

The song is about a young man named Rael who lives in New York City and is drawn into a surreal underworld inhabited by strange creatures. Rael struggles to make sense of what is happening to him and eventually comes to accept his new reality.

The lyrics to “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway” are clever and complex, and they paint a vivid picture of Rael’s journey. The song is also notable for its use of puns and wordplay.
