What is R2D2?

R2D2, or Artoo-Detoo, is a fictional droid character in the Star Wars universe created by George Lucas. A small astromech droid, R2D2 is a major character in all six Star Wars movies. Along with his counterpart, C-3PO, R2-D2 is a major character in the Star Wars saga. In the original trilogy, he and C-3PO are both captive of Jabba the Hutt. R2-D2 escapes captivity and helps Luke Skywalker destroy the Death Star. In the prequel trilogy, R2-D2 serves as Anakin Skywalker’s astromech droid during his time as a Jedi Padawan. He also joins forces with C-3PO to rescue Padmé Amidala from Separatist capture. When Anakin becomes Darth Vader, R2 helps him fight off Obi-Wan Kenobi and joins Luke on his quest to save Princess Leia from Vader.

R2-D2 has been described as “a standard protocol droid designed to be astromechanical”, meaning that he is capable of interstellar space travel and can repair starships and other machines. He is covered with various tools and gadgets that allow him to perform these tasks, most notably a retractable claw arm hidden behind one of his legs. His design allows him to independently operate various systems on board starships and perform other tasks not possible for humans or other races due to their physiology.

While manydroids in the Star Wars universe are sapient beings capable of independent thought and action, R2-D2 is unique in that he does not appear to possess any sort of sapience or self-awareness. Instead, he seems to operate purely on programming, carrying out instructions without any sort of emotional attachment or understanding. This makes him exceptionally loyal and reliable, but also somewhat emotionless and single-minded.

What is Star Wars?

Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise, created by George Lucas and centered around a film series that began with the eponymous 1977 film. The saga quickly became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. The first film was followed by two successful sequels, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983); these three films constitute the original Star Wars trilogy. A prequel trilogy was later released, consisting of The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002), and Revenge of the Sith (2005). In 2012, Lucas sold his company to Disney, which in turn started work on a sequel trilogy. The first installment of this sequel trilogy, The Force Awakens, was released on December 18, 2015, more than thirty years after the release of the original film.

The franchise has expanded into other media, including television series, video games, novels, comic books and theme park attractions. Star Wars also holds a Guinness World Records title for the “Most Successful Film Licensing Franchise”. In 2015 alone, the franchise generated $2 billion in merchandise sales.
