Gregory Isaacs
Gregory Isaacs (born 15 July 1951) is a Jamaican reggae musician. He was born in Greenwich Farm, Kingston, and first found fame as a deejay in the 1970s, having started his professional career aged 13. By the late 1970s he had switched his style to singing, having one major hit with “My Only Lover” (1974), but it was with his album Night Nurse (1982) that he gained an international reputation. It included the single “Night Nurse” plus the hit singles “Melanie” and “Stranger in Town”.

His mother was a deeply religious woman who would sing hymns in the local church, and his father was a strict disciplinarian who worked as a Lieutenant in the Jamaican Constabulary Force. Gregory began listening to American R&B and jazz on the radio, and he soon became enamored with the sounds of Clyde McPhatter, Nat King Cole, and Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers. When he was just 13 years old, he left home to pursue his musical dreams in Kingston.
