Introduction

“It Is Well with My Soul” is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. First published in Gospel Songs No. 2 by Ira Sankey and Bliss (Hope Publishing Company, Chicago, Illinois, 1876), it is possibly the best-known composition by Bliss. The song was written after numerous personal tragedies including the death of all four of Spafford’s daughters.

History of the Song

The hymn “It Is Well with My Soul” was written by Horatio Spafford, a successful lawyer and real-estate broker from Chicago. In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire destroyed much of the city and Spafford’s business. A few years later, he decided to take his family on a vacation to Europe to help them recover from their losses.

In November of 1873, the ship carrying the Spaffords across the Atlantic Ocean hit a storm and began to sink. The crew was able to get into lifeboats, but Horatio’s wife and four daughters drowned. When Spafford finally arrived in England, he sent a telegram to his friend, hymnwriter Philip Bliss, that simply said, “It is well.”

Spafford then wrote the words to “It Is Well with My Soul” while on a ship headed for Jerusalem. The hymn was first published in 1876 and quickly became popular among Christians around the world.

Lyrics

It is well with my soul, it is well
Even though the trials come
My faith has found a resting place
In everything will be alright
I know it will be well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
