The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a funk rock band

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are an American funk rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1983. The group’s musical style primarily consists of rock with an emphasis on funk, as well as elements from other genres such as punk rock and psychedelic rock. When played live, their music incorporates elements of jam band due to the improvised nature of much of their performances. The band has won seven Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

The group’s first album, The Red Hot Chili Peppers (1984), contained punk rock-influenced songs and was not a commercial success; it sold around 6,000 copies at its peak. Following a turn to heavier rhythms and vocals for Freaky Styley (1985), the Chili Peppers returned to their earlier, more emotional style with Mother’s Milk (1989) and Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991). These albums became breakthrough successes for the band; both sold several million copies each worldwide and were awarded with numerous music industry accolades. Californication (1999) continued this trend and became one of the best-selling albums of all time, selling over 15 million copies worldwide. After a long hiatus due to Frusciante’s drug addiction issues, By the Way was released in 2002, followed by two more wildly successful albums: Stadium Arcadium (2006), which became their first album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, selling over 800,000 copies during its first week; and I’m with You (2011).

The band’s original lineup consisted of founding members Anthony Kiedis (vocals) and Flea (bass), along with drummer Jack Irons and guitarist Hillel Slovak. Slovak died from a heroin overdose in 1988, and Irons left the band shortly thereafter; Chuck Biscuits joined the group later that year. In 1990, Slovak’s replacement John Frusciante joined the band on guitar after he was recommended to Flea by one of his brothers; Frusciante, who had been previously associated with the punk rock scene at L.A.’s Venice Beach, brought a more melodic approach to the band’s music while still maintaining its funk roots. The lineup remained stable until December 1992 when Frusciante unexpectedly quit the band mid-tour; he was replaced by ArikMarshall who played on tour for several months before partially re-recordingFrusciante’s parts during the recording sessions for One Hot Minute (1995). Josh Klinghoffer joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2007 as their tenth guitarist since Frusciante’s departure; Klinghoffer would ultimately supplant Marshall as Frusciante’s replacement in 2009.

With over 80 million albums sold worldwide, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the bestselling American bands of all time and have been nominated for sixteen Grammy Awards, winning seven. They have had five number-one albums on the Billboard 200 – Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991), Californication (1999), By the Way (2002), Stadium Arcadium (2006) I’m with You (2011) – and hold the record for most number-one singles played on alternative rock radio stations, with thirteen.
