History of the Music Hall in Kansas City

The Music Hall in Kansas City was built in 1878 and was designed by the architect, John McShain. The Music Hall was originally built as a vaudeville theatre and it was also used as a movie theatre. The Music Hall was closed in the early 1970s, but it was reopened in 1977 as a performing arts centre.

The Music Hall in Kansas City was built in 1881 as part of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Depot. The 3,500 seat theater cost $300,000 to build and was designed by architect John G. Waite in the Beaux-Arts style. It opened on October 1, 1881 with a production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado”.

The theater was used for a variety of productions over the years, including opera, ballet, plays, lectures, and concerts. It became known as the “Madame Butterfly House” because of the number of productions of that opera that were staged there. It was also home to the Kansas City Symphony from 1932-1984.

In 1979, the theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 1980, it underwent a $2.5 million renovation which restored many of its original features. The theater continues to be used for a variety of events today and is one of Kansas City’s most beloved landmarks.

The Plot of the Baisis is that a disfigured man, known as the Phantom who loves to live beneath the Paris Opéra House, hides in the catacombs and exerts his control over everyone who works there. When he falls in love with Christine Daaé—a beautiful soprano—he begins to mentor her singing career with the hope that she will love him back. But his plans go terribly wrong when Christine falls for Raoul de Chagny—the young Vicomte de Chagny—instead.

The Phantom of the Opera was hugely successful, becoming Broadway’s longest-running musical and winning seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
