What is Electronic Dance Music?

Electronic dance music, also known as EDM, is a broad range of percussive electronic music genres produced largely for nightclubs, raves and festivals. EDM is generally produced for playback by disc jockeys (DJs) who create seamless selections of tracks, called a mix or mashup, by segueing from one recording to another.

EDM producers also perform their music live in a concert or festival setting in what is sometimes called a live PA. In Europe and North America, EDM is more commonly called simply “dance music”, or simply “dance”.

The global electronic dance music market is estimated to be worth $6.9 billion USD according to a report by business research firm IBISWorld in 2014. This figure includes both the value of physical sales of EDM recordings and revenues generated from live performances, digital downloads and licensing fees charged for use of EDMs in film, television and advertising.
