What is Electronic Dance Music?

Electronic Dance Music, or EDM as it’s commonly called, has ballooned from a niche genre to become one of the most popular forms of music in the world. It has taken the place of rock music as the soundtrack to our lives, and its influence can be heard in everything from pop music to hip-hop.

But what exactly is EDM? It’s a question that even diehard fans can have trouble answering, because the genre is so diverse and ever-changing. At its core, EDM is simply music that is produced electronically. This means that it can come in many different styles, including house, trance, dubstep, techno and more.

EDM is often characterized by its high energy beat which can make it perfect for dancing. But not all EDM is created equal – some producers are more concerned with making catchy hooks or creating a chilled-out atmosphere than making you want to hit the dancefloor.

Despite its reputation as being “ rave music”, EDM has actually been around for decades. It first gained popularity in the clubs of Europe in the 1980s, before exploding into the mainstream with hits like “Gangnam Style” and “Levels” in recent years.
