Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, known professionally as Nas /ˈnɑːz/, is an American rapper and record producer. Discovered by hip hop producer Large Professor, he signed to Columbia Records in 1996, on the strength of his debut single “The World Is Yours”. His debut album Illmatic (1994) received universal acclaim from both critics and the hip hop community and is frequently ranked as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. His follow-up It Was Written (1996) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, stayed there for four consecutive weeks, and went Double Platinum in two months. From 2001 to 2005, Nas was involved in a highly publicized feud with Jay Z.
