Turkish Female Psychedelic Rockers

The Turkish music scene is incredibly vibrant and diverse, with a variety of genres and sub-genres being represented. One of the most interesting and unique genres is psychedelic rock, which has a rich history in Turkey. Here are some of the most talented and exciting Turkish female psychedelic rockers you need to know about!

Selda Bagcan

One of the most iconic figures in Turkish music, Selda Bağcan was born in 1948 in the small village of Erdemli in Mersin province. She began her musical career in the late 1960s, singing covers of Western pop and rock songs with her husband and fellow musician, RasimCan. The couple soon began writing their own songs, fusing traditional Turkish folk music with Western rock and psychedelia.

In 1973, they released their debut album, Selda, which quickly became a best-seller. The album featured such classics as “İnce Ince Bir Yıldız Doğar” (“A Thin Star is Born”), “Gitme Dur Aya Benzer” (“Don’t Go Away, You Look Like the Moon”), and “Cümbüş Cümbüş Olalım” (“Let’s Get Groovy”).

While Selda’s early work was inspired by Western pop and rock, she soon began incorporating elements of Turkish folk music into her compositions. This fusion of styles made her one of the most popular and influential musicians in Turkey. Her 1974 album Yüksek Sesle Dalga Geçmek (“Talking Over Waves”), for example, featured traditional Turkish instruments like the bağlama and kemenche alongside electric guitars and drums.

Despite her success, Selda faced censorship from the Turkish government throughout her career. In 1978, she was arrested and jailed for four months on political grounds. After her release, she was banned from performing in Turkey for five years. During this time, she moved to Germany and continued to record and release music.

In the late 1980s, Selda returned to Turkey and resumed her musical career. She has since released several more albums, including 1988’s Albüm (“Album”), 1992’s Dostlar Benimle Beraberdir (“Friends Are With Me”), and 2008’s Yol Gidenler (“Those Who Go on a Journey”).

Selda’s music has been hugely influential both inside and outside Turkey. In 2006, she was awarded the title of “State Artist” by the Turkish government, and in 2016 she was inducted into the Habertürk Music Hall of Fame. Her songs have been covered by a wide range of artists, including Feist, Patti Smith, Devendra Banhart, Beirut, DadashowbiznizzzzzzaaazzzzaaaayyyyOOOOooooWWWwwwww!!!!!!
