There are four different types of hip hop music. They are old school hip hop, new school hip hop, conscious hip hop, and trap music.

Introduction

Hip hop music is a genre of music that evolved out of the hip hop culture in the 1970s. This type of music is typically characterized by its use of samples, beats, and often rhyming lyrics. It is also often associated with MCing or rapping. Hip hop music has grown to become one of the most popular genres in the world, with artists such as Jay-Z, Eminem, and Drake achieving global success.

There are many different subgenres of hip hop music, each with its own unique style and sound. Some of the most popular subgenres include trap, gangsta rap, conscious rap, and drill.

Old School Hip Hop

Old school hip hop is a style of hip hop that was popular from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. The term “old school” is used to describe anything that is from an earlier time period, so in this case it is used to describe the first wave of hip hop music. This type of hip hop is characterized by its use of sampling, which is the reuse of previously recorded music.

Characteristics

Different types of hip hop music emerged from different regions in the 1970s and 1980s, reflecting the local culture and demographics.

The three most common styles of hip hop are East Coast hip hop, West Coast hip hop, and Southern hip hop. Each style has a different history and is associated with different artists.

East Coast Hip Hop:
East Coast hip hop is characterized by its focus on lyrical content and delivery, as well as its jazz and soul influences. Artists associated with this style include Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, and Wu-Tang Clan.

West Coast Hip Hop:
West Coast hip hop is characterized by its laid-back style and G-funk sound. Artists associated with this style include Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur, and Nate Dogg.

Southern Hip Hop:
Southern hip hop is characterized by its bounce beat and heavy use of samples from Funkadelic and other Parliament-Funkadelic albums. Artists associated with this style include Outkast, Goodie Mob, Ludacris, and Lil Wayne.

Origin

The first hip hop tracks were created in the early 1970s by Afrika Bambaataa, a Bronx DJ who incorporated elements of soul, funk, and disco into his sets. His stage name, which means “creator of people,” was inspired by the Zulu nation’s Chief Bantu. The name “hip hop” was also coined by Bambaataa and refers to the style of dance that was popular at the time.

Bambaataa’s track “Planet Rock” became an underground hit in 1982 and helped to popularize electro music. This new style of music, which combined elements of rap, R&B, and dance music, would come to be known as hip hop.

In the 1980s, hip hop became a worldwide phenomenon thanks to artists like Run-D.M.C., Public Enemy, N.W.A., and the Beastie Boys. These groups brought hip hop to a mainstream audience and helped to establish it as a viable genre of music.

Today, hip hop is one of the most popular genres of music in the world. It has spawned countless subgenres and subcultures, each with its own sound and style.

Notable Artists

Old School Hip Hop is a term used to describe the earliest commercially successful hip hop music, typically dated between 1979 and 1986. Notable artists from this era include Run-DMC, Afrika Bambaataa, the Sugarhill Gang, and Kurtis Blow. This type of hip hop was characterized by its heavy use ofsampled beats and basic rhyming schemes, as well as its focus on party-oriented themes.

New School Hip Hop

New school hip hop is a subgenre of hip hop that includes rap artists who rose to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The new school style is characterized by its use of samples from older songs, often from soul or funk tracks. Many new school artists also borrowed from other genres including rock, jazz, and Latin music.

Characteristics

New school hip hop is a genre of hip hop music that refers to the second wave of hip hop music, originating in 1983–84 with the early records of Run-D.M.C. and LL Cool J. It is characterized by its diversity, quality, and innovation in both rapping and production. New school artists have expanded the possibilities of hip hop while preserving the traditional elements of rap music. They have also introduced new elements to hip hop, including Hip Hop Soul and Hip House.

Origin

The first hip hop music was created in the early 1970s by Afrika Bambaataa, a DJ from the Bronx in New York City. His style of music, which he called “hip hop”, was a new way of creating music by using sampled sounds from other records, adding his own vocals and beats, and using turntables to create an original sound. This new style of music quickly spread throughout the city, and soon other DJs began creating their own versions of hip hop.

Today, there are many different types of hip hop music, each with its own unique style and sound. Here are just a few of the most popular types:

Commercial Hip Hop: This is the type of hip hop that you hear on the radio and see on MTV. It is usually created by major record labels and artists who are trying to appeal to a wide audience. This type of hip hop is often criticized for being too commercialized and watered down.

underground Hip Hop: This type of hip Hop is NOT created by major record labels. Instead, it is created by independent artists who are trying to create something new and different. This type of hip hop often has a more raw and edgy sound than commercial hip hop.

Gangsta Rap: This type of hip hop was popularized in the 1990s by artists like Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur. It often tells stories about life in the inner city, gang violence, and drugs. Gangsta rap is often criticized for its violent and misogynistic lyrics.

East Coast Hip Hop: This type of hip hop originated on the East Coast of the United States, in cities like New York City and Philadelphia. It has a harder sound than West Coast hip hop, with more emphasis on rhyming skills than melody. Notable east coast artists include Nas, Jay-Z, and The Notorious B.I

By 1975, hip hop culture had spread to Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, and other major US cities. In the 1980s, rap music became more mainstream with the release of commercially successful songs such as “Rapper’s Delight” (1979) by the Sugarhill Gang and “The Breaks” (1980) by Kurtis Blow.

Hardcore hip hop is often considered to be a more underground genre, but it has gained mainstream popularity in recent years thanks to artists like Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole.

Trap Music

Trap music is a subgenre of hip hop music that originated in the early 1990s in the Southern United States. It is typified by heavy use of sub-bass frequencies and often has a dark, menacing, or violent lyrical content.

– MCing/rapping: A rhythmic style of speaking or chanting over a backing track, typically in an intricate, rhyming flow.
– DJing/scratching: Manipulating sounds on vinyl records using a turntable, to create new rhythms and tracks.
– Breakdancing: An athletic style of street dance that developed as part of the hip hop culture.
– Graffiti art: Writing or drawing usually unauthorized public messages or images in order to spread a political or social message.
