Introduction

“Up Town Funk” is a 2014 song recorded by American artist Mark Ronson featuring vocals by Bruno Mars. It was released as the lead single from Ronson’s fourth studio album, Uptown Special (2015), on November 10, 2014. The song peaked at number one in the United Kingdom and the United States, becoming Ronson’s second UK chart-topper and Mars’ fourth US number-one single. “Up Town Funk” also reached number one in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and 19 other countries.

The song waswritten by Ronson, Mars, Philip Lawrence and Jeff Bhasker, and produced by Ronson, Bhasker and Emile Haynie. A number of music critics noted its similarity to music by 1980s artists such as Marvin Gaye, James Brown and Morris Day; the four writers were sued for copyright infringement by Roger Troutman’s estate and Collage Music Group in January 2015. Following its release as a single dated November 10, 2014 in the US on Columbia Records—as a digital download—and December 8 internationally on iTunes Stores as part of Uptown Special pre-order campaign; “Up Town Funk” entered several US Billboard charts including Hot 100—where it peaked at number one for seven consecutive weeks—as well as Digital Songs at number three position with sales of 340 thousand copies becoming Lawrence’s first US top-ten single; this made him only the second artist ever to achieve this feat since Michael Jackson in 1983 with “Billie Jean”.

Ronson has stated that he was inspired to make the song after hearing Mars’ debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2010), which he felt had “a lot of energy … kind of throwback to another era.” He had originally intended to record it with Drawing Board–signed English singer Katy B—whom he had been working with on material for her forthcoming second studio album—but she turned it down as she did not like how her voice sounded over Ronson’s production. After getting Mars into his studio for a couple days recording improvised jams these three decided upon Up Town Funk as their collaboration. It took two additional months until all four were satisfied with the final product which then became Uptown Specials lead contemporary hit radio station KIIS 102.7 FM selected single in October 2014 which resulted in public anticipation prior to its release date

The Making of “Up Town Funk”

It all started with a funky bassline…

Hitmaker producer Mark Ronson gathered an all-star team of musicians to record “Uptown Funk,” the irresistibly catchy lead single from his fourth studio album, Uptown Special. The result was one of the biggest hits of the decade, spending 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time.

Ronson enlisted Bruno Mars, who co-wrote and sang lead vocals on the track, to help him create a new sound that would pay homage to the classic funk grooves of the ’70s and ’80s. To do this, they recruited some of the most respected names in funk and R&B, including Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist Bernie Worrell, legendary drummer Zigaboo Modeliste (of The Meters), and horn players Anthony Brown (of Tower of Power) and Mike Mills (of Earth, Wind & Fire).

The result is a timeless groove that still gets people moving today. Michael Sweeney’s trumpet sheet music for “Up Town Funk” captures all the energy and excitement of this classic hit.
