“Uptown Funk” is a song by English producer Mark Ronson from his fourth studio album, Uptown Special (2015), featuring American singer and rapper Bruno Mars. The song was released as the album’s lead single on 10 November 2014 in the United Kingdom and on 18 November in the United States.genre of contemporary R&B, soul and funk. The song’s lyrics were written by Jeff Bhasker, Brunswick, Philip Lawrence, Dreux Richard and Ronson, while its music was composed by Ronson, Bhasker, Lawrence and Mars. “Uptown Funk” marks Lawrence’s and Mars’ fourth collaboration with Ronson (after feature spot appearances on “Locked Out of Heaven”, “Treasure” and “Gorilla”).

Rapper Trinidad James first brought public attention to the track by posting a link to it on his Twitter account in December 2013.Mars & co-producer Jeff BhaskerSoon thereafter, record label Epic Records contacted Ronson about working with Mars on the song. When Uptown Special was completed, according to an interview given by Mars for GQ’s February 2015 issue, he had no input into which songs would be released as singles; “Uptown Funk” was chosen as the lead single without any input from him. Recording of “Uptown Funk” took place at various locations worldwide between May 2014 and August 2014; it was recorded at servers owned by American Internet companies Facebook & YouTube.

“Uptown Funk” spent fourteen non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the longest-leading Billboard Hot 100 single of 2015 and marking Mars’ third number-one single on the chart. On January 17, 2016, “Uptown Funk” became only the second song to spend at least twelve weeks in the top five of the Hot 100 since 1980; it joined Adele’s “Hello”, which spent fifteen weeks in the region between November 2015 and February 2016. As of April 2015, “Uptown Funk” has sold 6.4 million copies in the United States. Internationally, it peaked at number one in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, and the United Kingdom; as well as topped charts in several continents including Europe and South America.”

The song’s critical reception

“Uptown Funk” has been described as an “irresistible cocktail of infectious riff, barrelling groove and strutting ego.” Following its release, the song received rave reviews from critics. In his review for The Guardian, Dave Simpson wrote that it was a “party anthem that could have been written by James Brown’s ghost.” Simpson noted that Ronson had “rafted in” numerous collaborators on the track, including Mars and Jeff Bhasker, and concluded by saying that “the only disappointment is that there isn’t more of it.” According to Music Times, the song’s production was reminiscent of Bruno Mars’ work on his album Unorthodox Jukebox (2012), while its lyrics were compared to those of Mark Ronson’s previous single, “Bang Bang Bang” (2010).

“Uptown Funk” entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 37 on the chart dated November 15, 2014. The song reached its millionth sales mark in the US in February 2015, becoming Mars’ sixth song to do so. It became Mars’ second single to achieve triple platinum status in the US. Additionally, “Uptown Funk” topped the charts in 19 other countries including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. The song has sold 6.9 million copies in the UK as of January 2016. In June 2015, “Uptown Funk” was certified double diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for track-equivalent sales of over 10 million units. As of December 2016, the song has sold 7.3 million copies in the US.

The song’s music video

“Uptown Funk” was filmed in October 2014 over three days in various locations around Greenwich, London, England. It was co-directed by Bruno Mars, who also appears in the video alongside Ronson. The production team recreated the ’80s TV show Miami Vice with pastel colors and neon lights. The music video features Mars and Ronson dancing along with a crew of background dancers on a sidewalks and in various stores and alleys throughout Uptown Manhattan’s Harlem neighborhood. The video also pays homage to classic dance films like Saturday Night Fever (1977) and Pulp Fiction (1994).

“Uptown Funk” has been performed live by Mars and his band, The Hooligans, on several occasions, including on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the Grammy Awards, Saturday Night Live, the Brit Awards, and the Late Show with David Letterman. The song was added to the set list of Bruno Mars’ Moonshine Jungle Tour (2013–14).

The song’s covers

“Uptown Funk” has been covered by various artists. In December 2014, James Corden and Mark Ronson performed a cover of the song on The Late Late Show with James Corden during a sketch in which they drove around London singing the song. The following month, Corden and Ronson performed the song on Saturday Night Live. In February 2015, a cover by Postmodern Jukebox reached number one on the Billboard Twitter Real-Time Trending 140 chart. In March 2015, Anthem Lights released an acoustic pop cover of the song as part of an EP entitled Pop Goes Punk Vol. 5. In May 2015, Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox released a doo-wop cover of the song featuring Aubrey Logan on vocals along with their regular band members; this version peaked at number 67 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and at number 11 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs chart.

“Uptown Funk” has been widely acclaimed by music critics. In a positive review, Rolling Stone praised the song, calling it a “very nice throwback” to the music of the 1980s. Time also praised the song, opining that it is “funky, fresh and Glycerine-coated”. The Washington Post described the song as “one part classic Minneapolis sound and one part get-down boogie”. New York magazine praised the song’s production and called it “a joyous exercise in ’80s-’90s groove garnished with funk horns”. Los Angeles Times writer Mikael Wood described “Uptown Funk” as the year’s most exciting pop single so far, writing that it features a “feverish exuberance rarely heard in mainstream pop these days”.
