Spencer was born and raised in Fairfield, Alabama. His father was a Baptist minister, and his mother was a church pianist. Personal life

Wade Spencer was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Albert and Emma (née Denson) Spencer. He has four siblings: two sisters, Martha and Carolyn; and two brothers, Albert Jr. and Charles. His father was a sharecropper and his mother was a domestic worker; the family struggled financially. As children, Spencer and his siblings were often left to fend for themselves while their parents worked. Despite these circumstances, Spencer says he had a happy childhood.

Spencer’s interest in music began at an early age; he recalls banging on pots and pans with sticks while his sisters sang around the house. When he was seven years old, his father gave him a guitar and he began taking lessons from a local preacher. In high school, Spencer joined the school choir and played football. He graduated from Chattanooga’s Howard High School in 1981.

After high school, Spencer briefly attended Tennessee State University before transferring to Middle Tennessee State University, where he studied music education. He graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in music education.


On March, 3, 2017, Wade Spencer died suddenly at the age of 41. The music world lost an incredible talent, and his friends and family lost a loving husband, father, and son. Spencer’s death was a shock to everyone who knew him, and his passing leaves a huge hole in the hearts of all who loved him.
