Introduction

We Will Rock You is a musical based on the music of British rock band Queen with a book by Ben Elton. The musical tells the story of a group of Bohemians who struggle to restore the free exchange of thought, fashion, and live music in a distant future where everyone dresses, thinks and acts alike.

The Australian production of We Will Rock You premiered at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne on 28 May 2002. The original Australian cast included Neil peart as Galileo Figaro, Andrew Dee as Britney Spears, Erika Heynatz as Scaramouche, Michael Falzon as Khashoggi, 03 as Oz and Simon Gallaher as Buddy Holly.

Following its success in Melbourne, the musical transferred to Sydney’s Lyric Theatre on 3 October 2002, where it played until 13 April 2003. It then toured to Brisbane’s Capitol Theatre from 9 May 2003. The Australian production closed on 3 May 2003 in Perth

What is We Will Rock You?

We Will Rock You is a musical based on the songs of British rock band Queen with a book by Ben Elton. The musical tells the story of a group of Bohemians who struggle to restore the free exchange of thought, fashion, and live music in a distant future where everyone dresses, thinks and acts the same.

The Plot

The show is set in the year 2309, “on a planet once called Earth”. The remaining humans are living in a city called “iPlanet”, under the rule of the Globalsoft Corporation and its mainframe computer, “the simulacrum”, or “the Grid”. They have forgotten their true identity and live in a simulated reality, believing that they are immortal. The humans are told that they will be freed from this virtual world when the time is right, but their memories have been taken from them to prevent them from deciphering the truth.

The story follows the journey of two rebels, Galileo Figaro and Scaramouche, as they try to remember who they are and save humanity from its simulated reality. With the help of a group of fellow rebels, they discover that rock music has the power to break through the Grid’s control and allow people to remember who they really are. They formulate a plan to overthrow Globalsoft’s control by spreading rock music throughout iPlanet and reawakening humanity’s memories.

The Characters

We Will Rock You is a musical based on the music of British rock band Queen. The Bohemians fight back by starting a band, which ultimately lead to a revolution.

The main characters in We Will Rock You are Galileo Figaro, Scaramouche, Killer Queen, Kashoggi, and Britney Spears. Galileo is a young man who is searching for his identity and purpose in life. He meets Scaramouche, who helps him start the band that will change the world. Killer Queen is the evil leader of Globalsoft who wants to control everyone andeverything. Kashoggi is Galileo’s friend who helps him start the rebel band. Britney Spears is a pop star who tries to help Galileo and his friends by giving them hope and inspiration.

The Music

The We Will Rock You Musical features the pulsating hits of Queen including another 18 newly added Queen tracks. The show has been written by the Award-winning Ben Elton who also wrote The Young Ones, Blackadder and Pop Idol.

We Will Rock You will keep you on your feet from start to finish with classic anthems such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Radio Ga Ga, Somebody to Love, I Want it All, We are the Champions and of course, We Will Rock You.

The Set

The Choreography

The original production of We Will Rock You opened in London’s West End in 2002 and played for over 12 years, becoming one of the longest running musicals in West End history. The musical has since been produced in 28 countries around the world, including Australia, where it premiered in 2005.

We Will Rock You was adapted for an Australian audience by director Simon Phillips, who also choreographed the show. Phillips’ choreography for We Will Rock You is heavily influenced by the work of Bob Fosse and features many of his signature moves, such as Tips and Jumps.

The Lighting

The lighting team for We Will Rock You Musical in Australia 2020 had a huge task ahead of them. The set was constantly changing and there were over 300 lights that needed to be controlled.

The team used a variety of lights including LED PAR cans, moving heads, and wash lights. They also used haze and smoke to create different effects.

The lighting designer for the show was Simon Haywood. He said that the biggest challenge was making sure that all the lights worked together seamlessly. He also said that it was important to create a light show that would complement the music and make the audience feel like they were at a rock concert.

The Sound
