Can You Feel the Love Tonight

Can You Feel the Love Tonight is a song from Disney’s 1994 animated film The Lion King composed by Elton John with lyrics by Tim Rice. It was described as having “the most romantic music of any Disney film.” The song was written to reflect Simba’s deep love for Nala. In an attempt to woo her, he sings to her under the stars, and the moment is so beautiful and perfect that the entire Pride Rock pauses what they’re doing to listen in on the moment. The song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song, and has since gone on to become one of the most popular songs from Disney’s catalogue.

Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast is a 1991 American animated musical romantic fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 30th Disney animated feature film and the third released during the Disney Renaissance period, it is based on the French fairy tale of the same name by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont and partially on the 1947 animation The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. The film centers on a cursed prince who must learn to love a young woman he has seen only once before, in order to break the spell, which was placed upon him and his entire castle by an evil enchantress.

The film’s success led to two direct-to-video follow-ups: Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (1997) and Belle’s Magical World (1998). A live-action adaptation was released on March 17, 2017. A sequel is currently in development, with Bill Condon attached to direct.

When She Loved Me

Sarah McLachlan’s “When She Loved Me” is one of the saddest songs ever written. It’s a ballad about an owner outlasting her pet, and it’s sung from the perspective of the toy cow Jessie in the film “Toy Story 2.” The original song is heart-wrenching enough, but when you couple it with the knowledge that it was written for a character who was discarded and forgotten by the person she loved most, it becomes gut-wrenching.

There are many covers of “When She Loved Me” on YouTube, but the one that always brings a tear to my eye is this instrumental version by Sam Yung. Yung is a exceptionally talented musician, and his beautiful piano playing does an incredible job of conveying the emotion of the song. This cover is so good that it was used in Toy Story 3 as part of a montage showing Andy growing up and forgetting about his toys.
