The sets and costumes of We Will Rock You

The musical’s look was designed by Tim Goodchild. He commented that “the set had to be pretty low tech as the show is not a technical spectacle, it is about the songs and the energy of the band. To convey this it had to be pretty sparse. The key was in the video content which would bring in both worlds, provide a narrative and also act as window dressing for some of the simpler scenes.” The original set was “a mix of rock concert and Tron with a bit of Mad Max thrown in”. It included giant video screens featuring images fromQueen’s career, an enormous light rig inspired by stadium rock concerts, banks of amplifiers and vehicles such as an armoured personnel carrier.
In 2006–2007, when We Will Rock You was staged in Madrid with a new cast and a revised script, directed by Jaime Azpilicueta, changes were made to both sets and costumes. The new production design for the 2006 UK tour retained Goodchild’s basic concept but added more variety to the set. In addition to more trees (inspired by Brian May’s descriptions of his childhood home), there were now platforms that appeared from beneath the stage to allow better access for those seated at the back of the auditorium, as well as two catwalks which stretched out into the auditorium itself.
The revised script saw many minor changes to both dialogue and staging; one significant change saw Scaramouche now being scaffolded up onto one of these catwalks during “No-One but You”, rather than remaining on stage throughout. This gave effect to Budgett’s claim that different productions could tailor their settings according to local conditions while still retaining his basic concept.
